America’s Oldest Quarantine Station
Built in 1799, in Essington PA, just outside of Philadelphia, the Lazaretto was a checkpoint and quarantine station for all immigrants entering through the Delaware River near Philadelphia. Yellow Fever was the disease of the time, so the Lazaretto housed hundreds of sick immigrants for about 75 years.
