“I’m trying hard not to fall,

but my back’s against the wall.

But what truly I must do, if I can’t stand the fall.

Will I leave without the ball, can I reach the family call.

So I must keep on trying, not the lies they keep buying.

But do I really need to try, like a plane that keeps on flying.

But I’m back at all the starts, from the ugly who throws the darts.

And I’ll switch to another path, trying not to play the part.

But I got to keep it moving, from the sun that brings the dawn.

Like playing a game of chess, you’re the queen and I’m the pawn.

Wake up to a brand new day, with new plans to make me play.

So now I’m on another path, add it up and do the math.

We must all try not to fall, with our backs against the wall.

Put one foot in front of the other, now you see me standing tall.

A brand new light has shine, with new ideas that take the mind.

Keep the punctuation tight, trying not to miss the line.

And now you see I didn’t fall, with my back against the wall.

And the victory is won, not just for me but all of ya’ll.”

Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day in Philadelphia is a remembrance for those lost due to circumstances of homelessness and drug addiction, from the past year. There were several speakers, including Bryant E. Culpepper Sr., who read the poem that he had written to honor the challenges that many face when experiencing homelessness. There was music, and moments of silence alike, as many gathered just outside of the public library to honor those lost.
